This was a release intended for newcomers, but ultimately, it appeals to neither those that have a passing curiosity in Dragon Ball, nor those that grew up with it. Parents should know that there are three versions of this anime: The CW4Kids version, which has no blood, cussing, or nudity.

Kai cuts down the time investment required to enjoy Dragon Ball, but it comes at a pretty weighty cost – and that, simply, is comprehension. Under the guardianship of Sun Gohan and his. The show makes a huge deal about the level of this sacrifice, but the only emotional reaction you’ll have to the whole scene is confusion. After the thrilling battle of Sharu, Z fighters have been updated.

This is undercut by some of the lazy plot-point executions, though – there’s a scene where a character sacrifices himself (a big deal in the original series), but in Kai, we’ve only known him for half an episode. So although Kai’s literal translation is King of Kings, it can also mean updated, modified or altered. In English, words rarely have two meanings, but in other languages and especially when trying to translate them to English, words can sometimes mean different things in different contexts.
WHAT IS DRAGON BALL Z KAI SERIES
That said, the standout moments of the original series make a return – Kai actually manages to make training montages fun – and some of the silliest moments look dazzling in the Blu-ray animation ( like when Piccolo blows up the Earth’s moon). What does Kai mean in Dragon Ball Z: Kai. It’s a small thing, but there are more oversights like this than we can forgive, and it’s something even veteran fans would find frustrating. It cuts through a lot of the fluff, but the result will confuse newcomers to the series.įor example, once the two real antagonists of the series get introduced, the show cuts to a reaction from the team of do-gooder earthlings, and there are miraculously four characters with them that you’d have no idea about if you hadn’t watched the original season. The thing is, Kai honestly feels more like the result of an anime chop-shop than a coherent series – Season One replaces the original 30 episodes with only 13. Kai exists as a re-do, a start-over, using the original cells and episode structures to tell the saga ‘as it was meant to be told’. Overall I love this show if you're someone who has never seen Z and want to see a version most accurate to the manga then watch Kai you'll love it.Dragon Ball Z: Kai’s main intention is to make the series more accessible to those that had a passing interest in the property, but could never fully commit (and with 450+ episodes in the original roster, who could blame you?). Speaking of which, it's why we didn't use Linda Young for the voice of Freeza on Kai,9 and won't be using her on future movies. Kai is also much shorter than Z too, the Frieza saga in Z ends at Episode 107, while Kai ends at episode 52 due to the lack of filler, but I think it is a good thing considering the fight between Goku and Frieza last for 3 hours in Z. It’s also the name of the remastered version of Dragon Ball Z, named Dragon Ball Z Kai, as Kai can also mean updated, modified or altered.

It has little to no fillers HD quality and probably improved on the voices, I also like the new "Dragon Soul" song at the start too! I do have some problems with Kai though one being that everyone in this show just loves to kinda break the fourth-wall, the show is literally riddled with exposition and it kinda of gets annoying this is the same in Z too, but I kinda didn't care at the same time because the show is so good, and lastly Gohan's character development is kind of choppy in Kai not so much in Z though, Z's version of Gohan's development was much better due to the fillers, but I get why they didn't because they wanted to avoid the fillers for Kai. But what does Kai mean in Dragon Ball Z Kai literally means King of Worlds in Japanese and is the name of the rulers of the universe.

The Dragon Ball series has always been my favourite anime and Kai is no exception, if you liked Z but didn't like most of the fillers then you're going to love Kai.
